A. Service learning
Service learning is a pedagogy integrating academically relevant service activities that address human and community needs. Students connect knowledge and theory to practice by combining service with reflection in a structured learning environment. The department of Psychology has made it mandatory for all PG students and final year UG students to do at least one service learning activity*. Students are divided into 7 groups under the mentorship of faculty members. All faculty members are part of the activity in leading and guiding students.
In the past years students have:
1. Conduced awareness classes for school students, neighborhood ladies self help groups (kudumbasree) and parent teacher groups on techniques to promote mental health, sexual and menstrual health and hygiene, learning and memory techniques, social stigmas, prejudices and discrimination, methods to prevent substance abuse and sexual abuse etc.
2. Sessions on mental health awareness and myths about mental illnesses to all students in Union Christian College and nearby colleges.
3. Provided psychological first aid and counseling services during 2018 floods and during Covid pandemic.
B. Internships
Mandatory internships for final year UG & PG students in mental health centers -. (1 month for PG and 2 week for UG).
C. Psychological services:
Psychological assessment and counseling services for Keezumaaad School for the Blind, nearby Gov. Schools, home for children.
The activities ensure that all students get some practical skill training.
3rd B.Sc. students went to a field trip to Vazhachal reserved forest on 29-06-2019 accompanied by 2 teachers. They interviewed tribal people, forest officials and local environmental activist Ms. Geetha Vazhachal. Attitude and perceptions of people living in and around forest area toward the protection of forest resources were explored. students also compared the variety of biodiversity of the forest and U.C. College campus.
